To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Plymouth Respect Festival, the REC has produced a book entitled Seeking Respect

The book looks back over the last ten years, from the first Plymouth Respect Festival in 1998, right up to the plans for this year’s event. There are photographs, recollections and memories from some of the first organisers, and a look at some of the characters who have helped to shape and design the various festivals. The book also takes a serious look at the way in which external factors have impacted on the local fight against racism and discrimination, including some significant national and international events such as the murder of Stephen Lawrence and the subsequent Macpherson report, and the apparent rise in racism, Islamophobia and xenophobia following the bomb attacks in London and New York and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Most of all, Seeking Respect is a tribute to all of the people who have participated in the Plymouth Respect Festival since its inception and who have contributed towards its phenomenal success.
